Ricky Yodogawa
PROFILE
Ricky is an advocate for judo and the positive life lessons it teaches. It did not matter if you were a beginner or an elite athlete, Ricky treated all his students with the same level of respect and consideration. He had many mentors that contributed to his success as an athlete and coach in the sport of judo.
Richmond Roots Ricky grew up in Steveston and was a deckhand on his dad’s fishing boat and his brother’s skiff as part of the mosquito fleet. Even after moving to Surrey, he would drive out to support the Steveston Judo Club. He still travels to Richmond on a regular basis to golf, walk with friends, and instruct future judoka.
Did You Know In a team match, Ricky fought Alma May Stokes and was thrown by her, losing the match. He would later marry her.
Barriers Overcome It would take Ricky, three years to win his first match. Thinking he was not strong enough to compete against his opponents, Hank Mukai introduced Ricky to weightlifting which helped him get stronger, and become a national champion.
