Jean-Jacques (JJ) Schmidt
PROFILE
In 1980 JJ stated as an Assistant Jr. Development Coach with Kajaks. In 1998 he started coaching the Master’s program becoming head coach of the running program in 2000. He led this program until 2017. JJ’s Juniors and Senior athletes have won medals at the Provincial, National and International Levels.
Richmond Roots JJ came to Richmond in 1973. In 1980 at the request of his young daughter, JJ attended his first Kajaks Track meet; he joined as an assistant coach the same year. From 1980 to 2017 JJ took on coaching athletes ranging from 20 to 85.
Did You Know On occasion Jean-Jacques has competed against some of his own athletes, even beating them from time to time.
Barriers Overcome In the mid-1990’s JJ struggled with a serious back problem as well as undergoing knee surgery. During his recovery he continued to train and coach his athletes.
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS
Recognition JJ has been honored by the Kajaks in 2007 as the Volunteer of the year and in 2017 with a Lifetime Achievement award. The Richmond Sports Council recognized JJ in 2011 as a Builder of the Year. In 2018 issued a certificate of appreciation for his efforts at the BC Elementary Championships.

Championship Over the years JJ has had the privilege of coaching numerous accomplished athletes. This includes Mark Pinckard and fellow Richmond Wall of Fame inductees Gwen McFarlan, Avril Douglas and Fred Pawluk.

Contribution to Richmond Sport JJ has been active in the Track & Field community for over 35 years. He has coached both junior and senior athletes for the Kajaks. He has been recognized for his contributions towards the BC Elementary Track and Field Championships.
