Doug Staveley
PROFILE
Doug played high school football, rugby, basketball, baseball and cricket at Lord Byng, followed by football and rugby at UBC, where he also began his officiating career. He coached multiple high school and community sports for 40 years. Doug was also a long time football official (junior, senior, college and professional).
Richmond Roots Doug started teaching in Richmond in 1972 and spent the next 40 years coaching at various schools including Steveston High, Cambie, Hugh Boyd and Steveston-London.
Did You Know Played a football game at a maximum security prison in Monroe, Washington vs. prisoners while playing for UBC.
Barriers Overcome Early on, Doug struggled to find work as a teacher and pondered a career change. Upon encouragement from his ex-high school football coach, Matt Phillips, he made one last attempt and applied to Steveston High - the rest is history.
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS
Recognition Doug was the president of the BC Secondary Schools Football Association. For his many years of service as a coach and administrator, Doug was recognized as an honorable life-time membership.

Championship Doug coached two teams to provincial championships. First in 1984 when the Steveston Packers high school boy’s basketball team beat their crosstown rivals Richmond Colts and again in 1993 with the Packers senior girl’s basketball team.

Contribution to Richmond Sport Doug impacted young Richmond athletes through his high school football and basketball coaching. He was also active as a coach in community sports and became a professional referee, spending three seasons in the CFL.
