Bernie Glier
PROFILE
Bernie was drafted 5th overall by the BC Lions in 1982. He played professional football with the hometown Lions from 1983-89 as a Defensive Back and Linebacker. He was part of the BC Lions 1985 Grey Championship team along with playing in the 1983 and 1986 Grey Cup Championship Games.
Richmond Roots Bernie was raised in Richmond and attended Tomsett, Bridgeport, Cambie and Richmond High. Growing up he played multiple sports along with junior and senior high school football. Bernie attended UBC in 1978 on a Football scholarship, and started his teaching career part-time in Richmond in 1983 while playing for the BC Lions.
Did You Know Bernie won the BC High School Football Championships as both a player and coach with the Richmond Colts.
Barriers Overcome Bernie was cut from the BC Lions in his first year and returned to UBC to finish his degree. After finishing his degree he made the Lions and went on to play seven seasons with the club.
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS
Recognition Bernie was chosen as #63 in UBC’s Top 100 Football Players from 1970-2016, and was voted as one of eight All Decade Defensive Back for UBC Thunderbirds that played during the 80s. He was selected as the Canada West All-Star Defensive Back for UBC, and is a member of the BC Sports Hall of Fame and the BC Football Hall of Fame.

Championship Bernie won the 1977 High School Football Champions with the Colts, the 1982 Vanier Cup with UBC and the 1985 Grey Cup with the BC Lions. As a coach he won the 1996, 1997 and 1998 High School Football Champions with the Colts.

Contribution to Richmond Sport Bernie coached High School Football with Richmond Secondary from 1992-2000 and is still teaching P.E. at the school.
